The Gibson Les Paul is the only real non-Fender threat to the Stratocaster, as Gibson took a different take on design in 1951, and realised that if they were going to compete they would have to come up with something different. Although there have been many versions of the Les Paul throughout the years this wasn’t because of any problem with the original, it’s more due to Gibson realising that there are all types of musicians out there and one guitar was not going to suit everyone.
Instead of emulating Fenders as other manufacturers have done, Gibson came up with a unique design in the Les Paul, and there’s more to it than the fact that they look better than Fenders, they are a well designed instrument with high quality and durable components, which is why there have been so many famous Les Paul players over the years.
