Vintage guitars from the CBS era are the guitars played by Clapton, Hendrix and others (although if anyone on eBay offers a guitar played by Hendrix, treat it with caution, and a huge pinch of salt). While not as feted as the pre CBS strats, they are still the ‘mutt’s nuts’ when it comes to electric guitars.
Some people have a problem with strats from this era, as this is when they started rolling off the production line, as opposed to strolling out of the workshop.
Bottom line though is, if it was good enough for Jimi, it’s good enough for me, and besides, some people get a bit too picky about certain details, and forget what the guitar is all about, which is fine if you are an investor, but otherwise, these guitars are the real deal.
If you are a collector, then a vintage is a great buy, as they only go up in price. If you want one for playing, then there really is no substitute if you want to get that sound right. These guitars are the choice of many musicians, and being cheaper than earlier models, they are definitely worth the money.
