The heavy relic is a crazy idea, but people absolutley love them. The first relic I played was a Rory Gallagher Strat relic, and was amazed by the concept, particularly as I’m a bit of a ‘guitar dropper’, so have never felt the need to pay extra for a ‘battered guitar’.
It didn’t sound any different, but it did have something about it, its a bit rock’n’roll, which is what Strats are all about, they are not there to be polished and dusted, they are there to be played!
Relics are collectors items though, so, if you are of that persuasion, then they are a good investment, as they are unique, and come with special cases and a certificate of authenticity. Some of the relics have been aged by guitar players, so you’ve got the satisfaction of a one off piece that has been created outside of the factory.
A ‘reliced’ Strat can be a great investment for player and collector alike, but don’t be surprised if your comes with a bit of rust, it’ll be the result of a guitar builders imagination and effort. The guitar of choice for today’s grunge inspired player, whilst distressed, they should nevertheless all be in working order.
